For our last night in Rome we went to see the Colosseum.
The lighting was perfect as the sun was just starting to set.
We peeked in to see the Forum, but we'll have to come back to really get a chance to explore ancient Rome (we threw coins in the Trevi Fountain, so hopefully we'll get a chance to return).
This morning we camped out in St. Peter's square for 2 1/2 hours to get a good spot to see the Pope for his Sunday Angelus, when he gives a short speech, prays the Angelus prayer, and gives the papal blessing. He spoke in Italian, so we didn't understand much (I only retained about 10% from my two years of studying Italian in college). You can find the entire speech here translated in English.
The crowd. It was HOT.
A group of nuns were in front of us playing the guitar and singing.
He finally emerged from his study window! We had really great spots, so we could see him pretty well.
Projection screens were set up so everyone could see.
So many people! The whole thing lasted only about 20 min, but it was really cool.
Even though we didn't understand what he was saying we could feel his passion and love.
Dan and I both think Pope Francis will be a great pope and we can't wait to see how he will lead the Catholic church in a new direction.
Wow, great view of the pope!
